About
We celebrate so well in the city! Parties, dinners on the sidewalk, and flags strung between the trees. All Souls' Day in Vondelpark aims to celebrate life by also making visible who is missed. In a busy spot, right in the middle of the city and accessible for everyone to see or visit. In a low-key manner, simple and without fixed rituals. And ideally beautiful to behold, as beauty can be so comforting. When releasing a boat, everyone has their own thoughts associated with it.
Since 2010, hundreds of people have gathered around the pond on November 2. People of all ages and backgrounds come together to pause and reflect on how things were. And hopefully, it softens the sadness just a little.
All Souls' Day in Vondelpark is a private initiative and is part of the Foundation Who Do You Miss? It is made possible with the help of many friendly hands. Special thanks to the management of Vondelpark, Stichting NAHst, Nico from Duoplant, Fonds voor Zuid, and above all, all the kind helpers and loyal, brave visitors.
Visitors information
Everyone is welcome. All Souls' Day in Vondelpark aims to show in a beautiful and accessible way that loss is a part of life. It offers an opportunity to remember everyone who is missed, in each person's own way. Although the same date as in the church is observed, there is no further religious background or intent.
Welcome
Free of charge
On November 2, the boats will be distributed from 6:30 PM at the tent by the large pond. You can also write something on the boat or a separate note. Everyone can place their boat on the water in their own time and way. There is no fixed program; all visitors can experience it in their own way. Beautiful background music will be playing.
How does it work?
Please check the website or Facebook-page when the weather is unpredictable. A little bit of rain is not a problem, heavy wind is.
The boats are simply handed out; no fee or donation is required. We are happy to provide them. However, we kindly ask that you consider the limited number of boats we can create and transport to the park, so that as many visitors/families as possible can receive a boat.
The weather
The small boats
The hundreds of boats are carefully assembled one by one. The parts are transported to the park in sections, and on the evening itself, the tops are placed onto the bottoms. The individual components have been created by various groups of Amsterdammers, including the fantastic helpers from Stichting NAHst (people suffering acquired brain injury). These are people eager to lend a hand, but for whom suitable work is not always available.
We are very happy to distribute the boats. The fact that you can receive something simply because is what makes it even more special. At some point, we may run out of boats. We can only make and transport a limited number in advance to the park. We appreciate your understanding, especially in sharing a boat with family or loved ones.
Exhibition Who Do You Miss?
On November 2 in the afternoon, there will be drawings and poems from children displayed around the pond. They express what missing someone means to them. All children and young people are invited to submit something.
Location
The large pond (often with a fountain) is located in the middle of Vondelpark, Amsterdam, between the Blauwe theehuis and the Melkhuis. From the entrance on Van Eeghenstraat, the large pond is directly visible. It’s about a 5-minute walk from the main entrance of Vondelpark on Stadhouderskade; just keep to the left.
